Overview

Many meters need a data logger to enable them to store historic data.

One of the primary benefits of using data logging for systems monitoring is the ability to collect data on a 24-hour, around the clock basis. Data loggers are inexpensive and they offer huge financial savings.

SHM manufacture a range of loggers that are robust and built to last. SHM data loggers have full networking capabilities to support any application. We install hardware designed to deliver data accurately without interruption, for your peace of mind. Once a logger has been fitted it will deliver reliable data to your PC. The software takes over converting the data into energy reports. We offer ongoing maintenance contracts to secure continued system operation.

The data loggers we supply are fully configurable with all software.

For monitoring water meters in meter pits or other hard-to-get-at meters, we can supply an RF Pulse Bridge.

  • Pulse logging
  • Status logging
  • Analogue logging
  • Channel Alarms
  • Connect any pulse output sensor for monitoring electricity, fluid flow, steam, heat, gas, oil, etc.
  • Extensive networking capabilities: RS485, telephone, radio etc.
  • Radio Frequency logging (no cables)
  • Log registers from Modbus slave devices
  • Dial in or dial out connections
  • Variable logging to one-minute intervals
  • Multi level security features
  • Fully configurable
  • Comprehensive software utilities
  • DL4, UL8, UL24, RL32 and ML32 loggers can be networked together in any combination.

Communications

All SHM loggers support a comprehensive range of communications options. Clusters of loggers can be networked together using RS485.

The logger communication protocol is designed to be efficient and minimize communications costs. To further reduce costs, we have various ways of sharing a telephone line or modem with another device. We can also collect pulses via low-power radio - ideal for remotely reading a water meter in a pit.

  • Telephone modem (internal or external)
  • Paknet (national packet switched radio network)
  • Ethernet - An Ethernet Gateway Unit (EGU) allows a cluster of loggers to be interrogated via the Internet (TCP/IP)
  • New RL32 Radio logger can collect data from up to 24 remote transmitter units
  • New Integral Ethernet Interface allows loggers (except DL4)  to be connected to any TCP/IP network (no need to use an EGU).

Software

SHM provide simple software utilities to configure and read data from the loggers.

We also have our own easy-to-use Energy Monitoring Software specifically for SHM loggers.  XLeMs produces Reports and Charts in the form of Microsoft Excel workbooks.

For large-scale or multi-vendor Energy Monitoring Systems we recommend Reality from Stark Software International, which is fully compatible with all SHM loggers.

UL8 Data Logger

Logger with 8 Universal Channels

The UL8 data logger has 8 universal inputs that can be configured independently as :-

  • Digital (contact closure)
  • Analog Voltage (0 to 10 V)
  • Analog Current (0 to 20 mA)
  • Temperature (-80 to +150 using a thermistor)

Each channel is configured independently and can store :-

  • Pulse count
  • Analog value
  • Status (on/off) - Time and date of each change of state

UL24 Data Logger

Logger with 8 Universal Channels and 16 Pulse Channels

The UL24 data logger has 8 universal inputs that can be configured independently as :-

  • Digital (contact closure)
  • Analog Voltage (0 to 10 V)
  • Analog Current (0 to 20 mA)
  • Temperature (-80 to +150 using a thermistor)

It also has 16 additional channels that monitor contact closures.
Each of the 8 Universal channels is configured independently and can store :-

  • Pulse count
  • Analog value
  • Status (on/off) - Time and date of each change of state

The 16 Additional channels are dedicated pulse counting channels.

RL32 Data Logger

Logger with 8 Universal Channels and 24 Radio Channels

The RL32 data logger has 8 universal inputs that can be configured independently as :-

  • Digital (contact closure) - Pulse count or Status
  • Analog Voltage (0 to 10 V)
  • Analog Current (0 to 20 mA)
  • Temperature (-80 to +150 using a thermistor)

It also has 24 additional radio-link channels that collect data from remote transmitter units and eliminate the need to run cables.  Transmitters are self-contained encapsulated units with their own battery supply.  Range is typically 70 to 250 m in free space and 30 to 200m in an industrial environment.  Range can be extended using repeaters where required.

See an RL32 in use at www.RedSquirrelWatch.org.uk where it is being used to monitor a Squirrel Feeder.

Depending on the type of transmitter, radio-link channels can store :-

  • Pulse count
  • Analog value
  • Temperature

Remote operation via a radio link is particularly useful in the following circumstances :-

  • Water Meters - The transmitter will usually work from within a water meter pit.
  • Gas Meters - ATEX certified intrinsically safe transmitters are available for use in hazardous areas.
  • Temperature monitoring - Transmitters with an integral temperature sensor are ideal for monitoring internal and external building temperatures.

ML32 Data Logger

Logger with 8 Universal Channels and 24

The ML32 data logger has 8 universal inputs that can be configured independently as :-

  • Digital (contact closure) - Pulse count or Status
  • Analog Voltage (0 to 10 V)
  • Analog Current (0 to 20 mA)
  • Temperature (-80 to +150 using a thermistor)

It also has 24 additional channels that can log register values from Modbus Slave devices.  The logger acts as a Modbus Master and can be configured to poll one or more Modbus RTU slaves.  It is designed specifically to collect data from Modbus-enabled electricity meters from Northern Design and Carlo Gavazzi.  However, the ML32's programmability should allow it to log data from most Modbus devices.  Please contact us if you have specific requirements.
